Colour Concoctions

Right now I am trying to clean up all my animation [as quickly as humanly possible, which is not easy with clean up!]....so I thought I'd post my newest colour script for my film.

I really want an earthy palette, but one that's also a bit wacky to work with the UPA-ish stylings.
I hope this works, but the real test will be when I start to paint my animation and backgrounds!

"Tah-dah" 4th year film leica reel [v.3]

As our local animation legend Kaj Pindal put it yesterday in his lecture about leica reels: "They are a living organism, you should be always updating your leica, and always ready to show it!"

Kaj is one of those people that you never question, you just smile and nod! I always LOVE seeing him speak, he still has so much animation joy after so many years in the industry, it's very refreshing!

So, in the spirit of Kaj, I am posting my current leica reel for my 4th year film, as it stands today! It will continue to change, morph, grow....and hopefully will be something I can be very proud of come end of April 2009! Comments, crits, etc are always welcomed!



A special thanks to my rad composer out in LA, Corey Wallace, who scrambled to get me a scratch score in time for our big screening! Thanks again Corey!!

#23, The Maltese Falcon

So I have been faithfully renting 2 classic flicks each weekend in my attempt at tackling the AFI's Best 100 Films list [as mentioned in a previous post]....

I have been dangerously lacking in my endeavor of doing a sketch after watching each film....OH I have so many idears, and yet, so little time. Hmm. Make time, I must make time!

Well, tonight was a good try. I put all freelance and other aside for a mere hour whilst I sat down and sketched out a few storyboards from The Maltese Falcon. Who doesn't love black and white flicks? And who doesn't love them WITH Humphrey Bogart? In all his smug bad-boy glory.

I only took a few minutes at these - I remember doing this exercise in first year with Maury Whyte, our storyboarding prof - he would pause it on a scene from North by Northwest or something of the sort, while we would madly sketch the scene in one minute. Ack, the madness of wildly drawing! And in first year, it was wildly :)

Here's my homage to first year days.
And really, it's just kinda fun! In a messy sorta way.

4th Year Film pitch package

So I have been reeeeeeeally busy getting settled over here in East Aurora, NY... adjusting to being a temporary American is interesting! More on that soonly :)

In the meantime, here is my 4th Year film pitch package that I handed in on the last day of 3rd year. I love my initial concept, but this summer it will need to go through a lot of growing pains and changes.

But here's the starting point. Critiques and comments are always encouraged and appreciated!

Musically speaking....

I am working on a musically-driven short film for our Music in Animation class.... I LOVE doing this kinda stuff [classical music + animation = sign me up!]...

Here's the quick background for the opening scene.
It stars a tree, a bird named Herbert, and an anvil.

And our narrator Allen is awesome - he was one of the voices on Babar, he rules!

Group film field studies

We are trying to work with a more graphic, fun, UPA-ish style [my fav!]... so I did a couple layout designs [well, one design, 2 colour palettes] trying to push the style a bit.

This is from a part in the film where the earth is newly covered with crops and food and the Ox is plowing the earth, so I wanted it to be fun and colourful, with some sketchy textures. If you click to enlarge the images, you can better see the textures.

And now.... I am gonna action analysize my heart out!!

Action Analysis Leica Reel v.1

Here's the Action Analysis leica, due today. This is the first pass, the audio is probably final, the music isn't and there are a lot of things to fix. But I don't have much time, I think the pose test is due next Friday.

Here are my revised beat boards for my Action Analysis project.... aka, my mini individual film we have to do this term. [Along with working on our group film and group meetings and class stuff... pant pant... !!!]

Once I get the character designs figured out and the style finalized and the storyboard drawn.... is it end of term yet??

Two Hobos and a Baby

Here is our last storyboard of the year! Wowza! [That's my own title for it...how extremely original!]

We were given the scenario and character descriptions, and we had to board the scene. And there was a "no tone" rule with this one, only linework. I cheated on panel 1....[insert evil laugh here]

One more painting assignment to go, and Second Year is officially over!

Gamblin' in Grover Gulch....storyboard

I finally stopped for a few minutes so I could post this puppy... our storyboard assignment that was due today. [Luckily the due date was pushed back from Friday, ack!!!]

This assignment differed from last term's, in that we had to board a scene/sequence in a story, rather than an entire story. [phew!] Still, it took a while. This board may have been slightly shorter, but we were required to do waaaaaaaaaayyyy more research.

We had to choose between 3 themes - Western, Medieval, Victorian.
I chose Medieval.
Just kidding....just checking to see who actually reads my jabber!!

No, to my parent's avail, I chose Western. [Thanks Mom for the story idears!!]
And we had to include a stagecoach.
Stinkin' stagecoach, like THAT'S easy to draw!

Anyhoo, enough ramble...I gotta start my clean-up animation due Thursday.
Aaaaaaaaaack.
